321 Globe Valve

321 Globe Valve is a globe valve made of 321 stainless steel (UNS S32100 / EN 1.4541 / ASTM A351 CF8C / A182 F321) — a titanium‑stabilized austenitic stainless steel, designed for high‑temperature service, anti‑sensitization, and general corrosion resistance.

Material: 321 Stainless Steel

  • Standard: GB/T 1220, ASTM A240 / A351 / A182, EN 10088‑1
  • Composition: Cr 17–19%, Ni 9–12%, Ti ≥ 5×C% (key addition)
  • Core Properties:

    High‑temperature stability: Usable from ‑196°C to +550°C, short‑term up to 815°C

Anti‑intergranular corrosion: Titanium binds carbon → no chromium carbide precipitation; no sensitization after welding or heat exposure — biggest advantage over 304/304L

Corrosion resistance: Good in atmosphere, water, steam, weak acids, organic chemicals; similar to 304 in general media

Mechanics: Tensile ≥ 515 MPa, Yield ≥ 205 MPa; good ductility & weldability

  • Ограничения: ❌ Poor chloride resistance → avoid seawater, brine, salt solutions; ❌ not for strong reducing acids (HCl, dilute H₂SO₄)

 Standard Material BOM

Part Материал Note
Body / Bonnet 321 / F321 / CF8C Cast or forged
Disc / Seat / Stem 321 or 13Cr / Stellite hardfacing For wear & erosion
Gasket Graphite + 321 / PTFE High temp: graphite
Packing PTFE / Expanded Graphite ≤200°C: PTFE; >200°C: graphite
Fasteners 321 / 304 / Alloy A286 High‑temp use: A286

Key Advantages

  1. Best for High‑Temp + Welded Systems:
    • No intergranular corrosion after welding or long service at 400–550°C → far better than 304/316
    • Ideal for steam, superheated steam, hot oil, heat transfer systems, furnace lines
  2. Reliable General Corrosion:
    • Excellent in water, steam, air, neutral chemicals, food, petroleum, refinery, and petrochemical processes
  3. Easy Fabrication: Excellent weldability, no post‑weld heat treatment needed
  4. Good Throttling: Globe valve design = precise flow control, tight shut‑off

 Typical Applications

  • Power & Energy: Steam lines, boilers, turbine systems, heat networks
  • Petrochemical: Refineries, ethylene plants, high‑temperature process lines
  • Chemical: Organic acids, alcohols, solvents, high‑temperature neutral media
  • Heating & HVAC: Hot oil, thermal fluid, high‑pressure hot water
  • Industrial Furnaces: High‑temperature gas & air lines
  • NOT FOR: Seawater, brine, chlorides, HCl, sulfuric acid
Comparison: 321 vs 304 / 316 / TA2
Condition Choice Reason
High temp (400–550°C) + welded 321 304/316 will fail by intergranular corrosion
General corrosion, <300°C 304 / 316 Cheaper, similar performance
Seawater / brine TA2 321 will pit & corrode rapidly
Strong acids 316L / Alloy C4 321 not suitable
High‑temp + chloride Inconel 625 / Hastelloy 321 cannot resist
Rule:

Choose 321 = high temperature + welding + no chlorides

 Installation & Operation Rules

  1. Flow direction: Standard — flow under disc
  2. Temperature: Max continuous ≤ 550°C; above this strength drops sharply
  3. Welding: Use ER321 / ER347 filler; no post‑weld heat treatment required
  4. Avoid chloride contamination: No salt, brine, or bleach service — causes pitting
  5. Galvanic: Compatible with other stainless steels; no special isolation needed

 FAQ: 321 Globe Valve

Q1: Why choose 321 instead of 304?
A: Only 321 stays corrosion‑resistant after welding or heating to 400–550°C. 304 becomes sensitive and corrodes fast.
Q2: Can it be used for steam?
A: Excellent choice — standard material for high‑temperature steam valves worldwide.
Q3: How does it compare to 316?
A: 316 better for chemical corrosion; 321 far better for high‑temperature welded service.
Q4: Is it expensive?
A: ~1.2× 304, ~0.9× 316 — very cost‑effective for its specific strength.

Final Selection Guide
  • Choose 321 Globe Valve = when you need globe valve control + high temperature (300–550°C) + welded construction + general corrosion resistance + NO chlorides
  • It is the standard workhorse for steam, power, refinery, and high‑temperature process lines.
